So you wanna build some muscle?

You're going to need to eat.... Many people are trying to build muscle, and many of those are failing. In almost every case this boils down to one of two problems:

1: Ineffective training
2: Ineffective nutrition

Point 1 is another point for another time, but point 2? The fact is that most folks just don't eat enough to gain. No, the bros of the 80's and 90's who gained as much weight as possible probably weren't in the right, but neither are the 2000's lean gaining crew who try to gain muscle with a 50kcal deficit

To grow muscle, you need to eat: - You need to eat to train
- You need to eat to recover from your training so you can train again
- You need to eat to eat to supercompensate from your training so that you can improve over time
- And finally, you need to eat so that you can store additional energy in the form of muscle tissue

That doesn't take much, but it DOES take something.

A gain of roughly 0.5-1.5% of your bodyweight per month is a great place to start

Adding the handles to the bar makes for a much more controlled alignment & the deficit (distance between handle & bar) can help your range too.⁣

One other consideration is how much this can protect all your internals such as joints, tendons etc., because it is so less restrictive. Protecting you from injury over time⁣
⁣
Leaning slightly back & using a narrow, neutral grip will keep your elbows tight to your lats helping to shorten then at the bottom & places much more demands on the lats as opposed to upper back fibres. 
Think of your lats as wrapping around your torso which can generate more mechanical advantages throughout the range & also knowing this you can imagine how much this affects the lengthening if those fibres when leaning back. ⁣

I often liken it to your tee shirt. Stand in front of your training partner & grab his tee shirt underneath his arm pits & pretend the material is his muscle fibres. Now gently pull the material towards you & see how much it stretches around his/her torso. That is the exact mechanics that your lat fibres will experience as you lean back slightly with the load creating force from your lats⁣

You should pull low NOT high to the chest & keep your shoulders depressed throughout, driving your elbows till your triceps are tight on your lats is your best path

For more stimulation to your upper back fibres when in a pull down. Sit more upright with your elbows flared outwards on a wide handle ☆ ☆  the MADD COACH ☆ ☆
