I walked into this cool scene at the opening of the ACSA (Association of California School Administrators) Classified Leadership Conference yesterday. I’ve watched hundreds of conference kick-offs here in the US, but I’ve never seen one that included the pledge of allegiance at the beginning. It made me smile. Not politics, no policy, just a group of committed, unified Classified leaders working to make schools a better place for students, staff, parents. .
Which brings me to my next point. . .schools are more than just principals and teachers. There are thousands and thousands of classified staff: paraprofessionals, clerical and administrative services, transportation services, food and nutrition services, custodial and maintenance services, security services, health and student services, technical services, etc, whose roles critical when it comes to student success, and the quality of employees (humans) we have in those position matters, and so does their professional development. .
Big thanks to the unsung heroes of education, the Classified employees. Next time you are on campus (or at a district office or County Office of Ed) as a student, parent, or community member, find one and thank one. I got mad love for anyone facilitating learning in front of a classroom, and also for the grueling hours administrators work dealing with politics and personalities. But I also have mad respect for custodians and front office staff because I know they run the schools. :) .
