This is the view from our front porch, and in the middle of the photo you can see our second woods. We named this woods Cedy's, because the man we bought it from is named Cedric. After making maple syrup off of this woods for most of his life, Cedric decided that 80 years old was a good age to stop sugaring. 😯
I LOVE the fact that you can look out our window and see our other woods across town. Ian is over there this morning, doing lots of woods work. The little knoll is insanely steep, and especially with snow shoes on it's easy to get caught and take a tumble down the hillside. It's so steep it hurts your ankles and you sometimes have to pull yourself up the hill using maple saplings for leverage.
Cedy's is pretty neat because it faces east, so the sun hits it first thing in the morning and the sap starts to run early. Cedric sugared this woods for decades before us, so the tubing was old and brittle. Last year we replaced the tubing and put in new systems to easily check vacuum. With the vacuum tighter than it had been in years, these trees produced like nothing we'd seen before, and the storage tanks we'd been using were not big enough to hold the sap that poured from the trees. We haul the sap from this woods using our army truck and boil it at the home woods, which is about an hour round trip for each load. We appreciate each of our woods for how unique they are, and this one is an amazing one!
