Day 18: Sleep
Day 18/29 days of wellness
Sleeping is a gift. A time for our body to switch off, restore and regenerate itself. Our mind to rest. Our body to rest. I say it’s a gift, because many of us for a whole swag of different reasons simply don’t know what a good sleep is. We don’t regularly encounter its true power. It’s often interrupted by our thoughts, by our children, by our over stimulation, by our inability to switch off from our stress-filled lifestyles. Sleep deprivation is often brushed aside coz it’s ‘just a part of life’ but it fucks with our entire being, ability to function and ability to be a rational, somewhat pulled together human. I am a huge advocate for setting the tone for our sleep environment. What it looks like for me. Tidy room, always. Like we just have a bed in our room, one picture on the wall and sometimes an essential oil diffuser. No side tables or ‘things’ and our drawers are hidden away in our wardrobe. No electronics, phone chargers, screens etc in our room after dinner. Curtains drawn. A ceiling fan to create a good temperature in the summer months and push down warm air in the cooler months (it has this cool reverse function thing going on). Dark bedding where possible. A little wind down routine before bed, teeth, stretch, books (I’m often putting Little m to bed and falling asleep myself) And I guess the most significant part is our bed. For a long time we had high lush beds the towered the over the floor. We decided it wasn’t for us. We changed to a futon that sits about 10cm off the ground. 1. It’s great for co sleeping - no baby rolling freak outs. 2. It feels way more natural, and grounding. 3. It’s quite firm, but we have both noticed our bodies are in better alignment and we have far less aches and pains due to our blood been able to circulate more freely 4. Improvements to our breathing and respiratory systems 5. An overall better sense of control in our lives. It is no joke, incredibly grounding to sleep well, on the ground hahaha. We have both had massive shifts in our perspective on life and what is important. 6. Less interrupted sleeps- fact. Tell me about your sleeping sitch?
